I only knew Felecia from her inspiring talk at the Conference at Notre Dame this summer on Catechesis and the Liturgy. What come to me as I think of Felicia is the poem by Flavia:
'Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same.'

Our prayers and thoughts are with you at this time of sorrow. All of the Leon children and their parents were wonderful people who grew up in our little church of St. Anthonys in Follansbee. Good memories and wonderful kindness abounded in the family. Such a wonderful person Felicia was and her love that spread among so many people. God Bless you in this difficult time.

To the Driscoll family,
You won't know me, and I only knew Felicia briefly many years ago when I was at the Kroc Institute, but her warm, bright smile and her vitality left such an impression. I can only imagine what a void her sudden loss must leave and my heart goes out to you. I hope that the outpouring of love I see on this website is some comfort.

Discoll family, It has been a privilege knowing Felicia over the years. She was a doer, a profoundly kind woman who impacted so , so many more people than you can imagine. Truly beautiful from the inside out. We all have 24 hours in a day but Felicia seemed to pack in far more than anyone else. She made her life count. We are all looking inwards and trying to emulate the remarkable lady that she was. The world truly is a gentler, happier place because Felicia Driscoll was in it. Our prayers are with you all.

As the attendance at her funeral attests, Felicia was a monumental presence in South Bend, and impacted many people’s lives through her work in education. I wrote the following testimonial in 2015, a year after our daughter Anya graduated from Good Shepard Montessori, which I hope conveys our appreciation for what Felicia and Dan (and many others at GSM!) made there. (I’m very glad now that I wrote to thank her before she became ill.)
Felicia’s life shows what a single individual can accomplish if they put the “pedal to the metal” and just leave it there until their time is done. She died too young, and that is a sad and unjust thing to be sure, but she accomplished much. We will miss her and all she did for our community in her life.

Love from the Hamlet Kresnys

Dear Felicia:
When our family arrived in South Bend from Seattle in the summer of 2013, we wanted to send our recently home schooled 13-year-old daughter Anya back to school to get more social contact and make new friends, but we were also fearful about sending her into the 8th grade in an unknown new community. After all, isn’t 8th grade the zenith of the tween clique culture, and the favored habitat of the queen “mean girl” and her vile henchgirls? With the pecking order firmly established, we were fully expecting to dip Anya into the final year of middle school and then withdraw her cleanly picked skeleton at the end of 8th grade.
Given our frame of mind, imagine our happiness in finding Good Shepherd Montessori through our new neighbors in the Northshore Triangle. At the beginning of school, Anya was warmly welcomed into a small, tightknit community, and never looked back. She made friends, and quickly gained confidence in her new school. Where we were expecting nightmarish conditions, Anya wound up having one of the best years of her K-8 experience, almost completely devoid of the traditional angst of middle school. So the culture at GSM was really remarkable, and what an antidote to the stress of moving across the country to a new place!
We were also very happy with the academic training Anya received in Art, Math, English, History and Science at GSM. Andrew and Laura Garvey were an amazingly effective team at providing both academic rigor and social development in a completely integrated environment. Anya entered high school well prepared to deal with pre-IB honors courses at Adams HS. She’s had a good first year overall, and we have little doubt that her experience at GSM played a large role in giving her the academic foundation and confidence needed to deal with the stress of a new academic environment.
It is also worth mentioning that our family is not Catholic (or even particularly religious), but this did not stop Anya from actively participating in the religious education at GSM. Carys and I viewed this as a good educational experience for her outside of our family culture, and that’s what it proved to be. Other families might not see things this way, but Anya immersing herself in another religious culture worked just fine for us, and there were no negative outcomes.
In summary, we would not hesitate to recommend GSM to anyone with middle school aged children looking for an antidote to the stressed-out life of the middle school years. We were sad we came so late to South Bend and couldn’t have more. What a great school!

Dear Dan and family, It is hard to find words to express the depth of my sorrow over the passing of Felicia. A beautiful flower was cut down in the prime of her life.. I reach out to you in profound sympathy and offer the words of the Book of Wisdom, hoping that they will ease your pain. Dan, Clare, Paddy, Jack, Liam, and Maeve,

My deepest condolences, and heartfelt sympathy, for your loss. As speaker I heard once said, paraphrasing Saint Paul (1 Cor 13:12): "She now knows as she has always been known."

May you be consoled even as you grieve, and comforted as you mourn. May laughter and joy stitch together the moments of sadness. May you always remember LOVE the most.

Felicia, my best friend of 38 years. Words cannot describe the void I feel now that you have left this earth. It still hasn't sunk in that you are gone and we will never be able to hang out again. I will always remember the laughs we shared and all of the heart to heart conversations that we have had. Your contagious smile and your relentless desire to go out of your way to encourage or help someone in need will never be forgotten. Know that all of the seeds that you have planted will prosper and they were not sewn in vain. Everything happens for a reason. So, I know that your family and loved ones who have been left here will grow stronger through this. Say hey to Mamma and Pappa Leon.
