I knew Vern in the 1970s when he, I, and Becky Balentine were friends. (Becky lived above me in a Colfax Street building that has since been torn down) I remember his easy going way and his friendliness. I also know that he was absolutely dedicated to fellow veterans and certainly wanted the VA to do the right thing. It's funny but I had been thinking about him the other day. Now, I know why. This morning, I felt even more strongly that I should look him up...so here we are. To Vern's family, you do not know me from Adam but I've always thought very highly of Vern. Despite adversity, I never saw him become bitter. He was just too mellow for that. As his family, please know that you and he are in my prayers.

I never knew Vern except from CJ who I am very close to. Through CJ I always felt Vern was a hero,. --Sonya

I will always remember Vern! He was a prime example of the needs Combat Veterans need when returning from HELL!! In my mind, I always compared Vern with my cousin, one came him with PTSD and one was KIA in KheSanh..
If you said Semper Fi to Vern, he would always reply, "DO OR DIE!!"

Semper Fi Vern! I can still hear you my friend...
