William "Bill" Simon Obituary

William “Bill” F. Simon, 82, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on January 25, 1943, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Joseph D. and Regina (Przybysz) Simon. On July 14, 1973, in St. Monica’s Catholic Church, he married Judith A. Jacobs, who survives. Bill is also survived by one son, Andrew “Andy” M. (Maggie) Simon of South Bend, Indiana, one daughter, Jennifer T. (Thomas) Douthart of South Bend, Indiana, one brother, Earl (Barb) Simon of South Bend, Indiana and two nephews, David (Nicole) Simon and Jeff Simon. Bill was also preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth A. Simon, and one granddaughter, Molly Llewellyn Simon.

Bill entered the Army in 1967 at the age of 24 and was stationed in Germany until his honorable discharge on his birthday in 1970. During his service, he worked as a Military Postal Worker. Upon returning home, he resumed his role as the first layman Postman at the Notre Dame Post Office (NDPO).

Bill was a charter member of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1027 and a proud member of American Legion Post 303. He retired from the NDPO in 2007. A lifelong usher at Christ the King Church, Bill began serving in the 7th grade and continued faithfully until January 2025.

In 1970, Bill met Judy through the Single Catholic Adults Club. He married his precious “J.J.,” and together they celebrated 51 years of marriage in July 2024.

In May 2003, Bill joyfully watched his son marry Maggie, and in September 2007, he celebrated his daughter’s wedding to Thomas. He cherished traveling across the United States, collecting postal stamps and coins, and spending quality time with his children, Andy and Jennifer.

Bill’s guiding mission was to instill five core values in his children: Faith, Love, Family, Wisdom, and Happiness. We believe he succeeded.
