Walter Hap Obituary

Walter Anthony Hap

Walter Anthony Hap of Granger passed away on March 11, 2024.

Walt was born and raised in East Chicago, Indiana. At Roosevelt High School, he was captain of the football team and student government president. Walt graduated from Butler University, where he studied pharmacy, played offensive end for the Bulldogs, pledged Delta Tau Delta, and met his beloved wife Rita Taylor.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Mary and Stanley Hap, and siblings Delores, Mamie, Stanley, and Edward.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of over 64 years, Rita; daughter Tonia (Pat) Murphy of South Bend; son David, Granger; daughter Andrea (Dan) Chustak, Mishawaka; grandchildren Eileen, Maria, Emily, and Meg Murphy, Katie (Rob) Ackerman, and Marita and John Chustak; great-granddaughter Anastasia Ackerman; and his brother Daniel Hap.

Walt and Rita spent the first years of their marriage in Anderson, Indiana, where Walt worked as a pharmacist and served in the Army Reserve. They moved to Union City, Indiana, in 1966.  There, Walt owned The Apothecary Shoppe.  Active in small town life, he was a long-time Rotarian and served on the school board.  Walt and Rita moved to the South Bend area in 1996 to be close to their grandchildren. He was their devoted “Pappy.” Walt enjoyed organizing Delt reunions and particularly valued those old friendships.

Walt lived a full life.  In his final illness, he found consolation in his Catholic faith and the loving support of his family.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Monsignor William Schooler in the Log Chapel on the Notre Dame campus, with burial to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
