Rev William B. Hund, C.S.C.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Rev. William Byrne Hund, C.S.C., 93, died at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind., on July 29, 2026, after a short illness.

Fr. Hund was born in St. Joseph, Mo., on August 15, 1932, the eldest child of Louis B. and Imogene (Byrne) Hund. After graduating from Christian Brothers’ High School in 1950, he enrolled at the University of Notre Dame. Fr. Hund earned an A.B. and M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN; an M.S in Sacred Doctrine from Holy Cross College, Washington, D.C.; and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Fribourg University, Switzerland. He professed First Vows on August 16, 1955; Final Vows on August 16, 1958; and was ordained a Holy Cross priest on May 28, 1960.

After ordination, from 1960-1961, Fr. Hund assisted in pastoral ministry and teaching at the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN. From 1961-1964, he studied at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. Between 1964-1970, he served as a teacher and prefect at the University of Notre Dame. From 1970-1971, he studied at the Collège de France in Paris, France. He taught philosophy at the University of Portland, Portland, Ore., from 1971-2002, and for the next twenty years he was in residence at the University of Portland assisting in sacramental ministries. Beginning in 2022, he resided at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, IN, where he stayed until his passing.

Preceding Fr. Hund in death are his parents and his sister Ann Hurd Miller Atkins. He is survived by his brother Louis Hund Jr.; his sisters Sue Hund and Mary Virginia Hund Makowski; and beloved nieces and nephews.

A Wake Service will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Moreau Seminary and Scholasticate, Notre Dame, Ind. Burial will be in the community cemetery at Notre Dame. Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, is in charge of the arrangements.
