Patricia Joyce Szigeti, 95, of Roseland, Indiana, passed away at home peacefully at 7:58 a.m. Monday, September 7, 2026, surrounded by her family. Patricia was born on November 2, 1930, in South Bend, Indiana, to Gerhard Charles May and Florence Kaminski. After Patricia’s mother passed away at the age of 42, she was raised by her step-great-grandmother “Nana.” On January 6, 1951, she married her best friend, Eugene Peter Szigeti, who preceded her in death. They were married for a wonderful 63 years. During her lifetime, Patricia worked at Metal Trades Equipment for 3 years and Associates for 3 years before becoming a mother, homemaker and caretaker. Patricia was also preceded in death by her son, Scott Eugene Szigeti, who was stillborn, her two daughters, Tammy Szigeti (Clark) and Kim Szigeti (Grant), grandson, Matthew McCollum, and son-in-law, Ronald St. Germain. Survivors include three daughters, Michelle Szigeti, Robin McCollum and Melanie St. Germain, all of South Bend. Sons-in-law, Don Clark, Craig McCollum, Tom Grant, Robert Carrico, and Erasmo Chairez. Patricia is also survived by four grandchildren, Christie Clark, Cheryl (Erasmo) Chairez, Christopher Grant and Ashley (Robert) McCollum Carrico; eleven great-grandchildren: James Bucher III, Brandon Parker, Ambrasia Lofton, Alivia Lofton, Ambrose Lofton Jr., Erasmo Chairez III, Maria Chairez, Adriana Chairez, Gabriel Chairez, Mason Carrico and Noah Carrico; and one great-great-grandchild, Princeton Garcia. Patricia was a
lifetime resident of Roseland and former president of the Roseland Citizens Association. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and Surviving Hearts. She was an avid book reader, loved traveling with her husband, playing bingo, and bowling with her family. She loved to garden and decorate for the holidays. Early in her life, she was an avid roller skater.
She volunteered at Leighton Center for Senior Health, sat on the Clay 4-H Advisory Board, and was a member of Memorial Hospital’s Institutional Review Board. She was passionate about serving her community of Roseland. Patricia was always ready to lend a helpful and caring hand to family and friends, with a shoulder to cry on, listen, and most importantly, being there to offer a BIG HUG. She will be greatly missed by all, as Patricia was the backbone of the family. Nothing made her more happy than watching her family grow. That includes her two cats, Sugar and Spice, especially Sugar, who was known as her guard cat, who loved to bite her at times. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 18, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a parish rosary will be prayed at 6:00 pm.
