Michael S. Smith

Michael S. Smith, 64, of South Bend, passed away on Wednesday April 17, 2024 at the Center for Hospice Raclin House, Mishawaka, IN.  He was born in Lancaster, PA, to George H. and Rosalie (Beachy) Smith.

Michael is preceded in death by his mother Rosalie.

Michael is survived by his father, George Smith and his wife Anna Mathews of South Bend, his aunt Ruth Beachy of Huntington PA.

Mike is survived by his twin brother Mark Smith and his wife Patti Barcome Smith of South Bend and their three children, Stephanie and Nick Palmer and family, Amber and Mathew Heckaman and their two daughters, Justin Zimpleman and Marcia Andrade and their daughter.

Mike is also survived by his sister, Linda and brother-in-law Jonathan Ponader and their 3 sons, Christopher and Haley Ponader and their daughter Cassady Rose, Nikolaus and Alicia Ponader, Jonathan Samuel Ponader and Triston Krebs.

Mike was a contractor for AmeriData and was hired as a personal computer technician for Cleveland Cliffs (then "I/N Tek and Kote"). He continued contract work at Cliffs as AmeriData changed ownership to GE and then Compucom. In January 2012, Mike became a permanent hire at Cleveland Cliffs New Carlisle as a "Process Computer Technician". He was a member of United Steelworkers local union 9231-01. He was a union representative for 9231-01 for the 6 years prior to his death. He was active in many golf groups with other Cliffs employees.

He was an avid golfer with many loyal golfer buddies. In particular his golfing / high school friends, Al Nelson, Tom Pallo, and Mike Pozzi. He enjoyed driving his sports car and was a gifted wood worker. 

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday April 22, 2024 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to American Cancer Society.
