Michael Guljas, 74, of South Bend, passed away on November 12 after a battle with cancer.
Michael was born on June 13, 1950 to Michael and Genevieve Guljas in South Bend. He graduated at 16 from St. Joseph High School and later Indiana University South Bend with a degree in Business Administration.
He played bass and sang in multiple bands while in his teens and twenties, and he continued to love music throughout his life, especially Steely Dan, Todd Rundgren and smooth jazz. In 1971, he married Susan Johnson, whom he met when his band played at a dance at her high school. They were married for 53 years and had three children and four grandchildren.
In 2015, Michael retired from the St. Joseph County Airport Authority after 32 years of dedicated service and spent his time with family, traveling, camping, and cheering on Notre Dame.
Michael was predeceased by his parents; Michael and Genevieve (Penkala) and brother, Frederick Guljas. He is survived by children Jennifer (Corey) Rusk, Joseph (Allison) Guljas and John Guljas, grandchildren Michael and Morgan Rusk and Lila and Genevieve Guljas, his siblings; Edward (Valerie) Guljas, Rev. Andrew Guljas, Bonnie (Jerry) Holderman, Rose Kelsheimer and Mary (Mark) Howie.
He was loved for his irreverent sense of humor and was the kindest, most generous person, always thinking of and living in service to others, including his time in the Army Reserves. He volunteered his entire adult life and served on many boards.
A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Cancer Society and Center for Hospice Care.
