Mary J. Szajko

Mary J. Szajko, 47, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2025, in her home accompanied by her aunt Janet Williams who served as her primary caregiver.  Mary was born on February 7, 1978 in South Bend to William and Kathleen (Lowman) Szajko, and was a lifelong resident.  Mary is survived by her mother, Kathleen Szajko of South Bend, Indiana; her brother, John Szajko of South Bend, Indiana; her nephew, Keegan Szajko; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members; and her feline fur babies, Callie, Dora, and Minnie.  Mary was preceded in death by her father, William Szajko; her maternal grandparents, James and Cecelia Lowman; and her paternal grandparents, Marion and Margaret Szajko.  Mary was a 1997 graduate of LaSalle High School and a member of St. John the Baptist Parish.  She had held various jobs through ADEC and Logan Industries.  She loved cats and kittens and was a huge University of Notre Dame football and Green Bay Packers fan.  Despite the challenges in her life, she always kept a positive outlook.  A visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Tuesday Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, followed by a Catholic Funeral Service at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.  Private burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery.  In lieu flowers, memorial contributions should be directed to Fried’s Cat Shelter in Michigan City, Indiana; Meow Mission; or the charity of the donor’s choice.
