Mary Ann (Kalal) Tepe

Mary Ann Tepe, 89, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 2:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

Mary Ann was born on June 16, 1932 to the late Charles F., Sr. and Anne (Mamola) Kalal in Chicago, IL, and has lived in South Bend since 1955.  Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Tepe; a great-granddaughter, Sadie McCann; and one brother, Charles F. Kalal, Jr.

Mary Ann graduated in 1950 from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Chicago, IL.

On September 26, 1953, as Mary Ann Kalal, she married Richard E. Tepe at the former St. Agatha Catholic Church in Chicago, IL.  He preceded her in death on January 24, 2017.

Mary Ann is survived by her two daughters, Christine (John Michael) Thompson and Jackie (Doug) Kronewitter, both of Mishawaka, IN; five sons, Steven (Debra) Tepe, William (Doris) Tepe, and Paul (Theresa) Tepe, all of South Bend, IN; Joseph (Norbert Shimkus) Tepe of Bridgman, MI; and Larry (Jennifer) Tepe of Rockford, IL; 14 grandchildren; Pam (Shane) Blackford, Cathy (Adin) McCann, Tracy (Andrew) VanSchoick, Heather (Michael) Sobieralski, Eric Tepe, Hanah (Kevin) Klodzinski, Monica Tepe and Nicholas (Sarah) Tepe; Nathan and Jessica Kronewitter; Athena and Achilles Tepe; Jackson Sletten-Seuring and Jamire Jackson; ten great-grandchildren; Kyle LaCluyse, Gavin and Bryson VanSchoick; Gabby and Leksi Sobieralski; Carmyn and Ethan Tepe; Norah, Dylan, and Charlotte Tepe; and one great great-granddaughter, Hope Taylor.

Mary Ann was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish, where she belonged to the Altar & Rosary Society, the church choir, and played the church organ for over 50 years.  Mary Ann was very opinionated, feisty, enjoyed bargain shopping, celebrating important occasions with her family, and attending her grandchildren's sporting events. She never missed a birthday or anniversary, loved to sing, enjoyed a few glasses of wine, collecting angels, her own special oven-baked chicken, and Aqua-Net hairspray. She will be greatly missed!

A Parish Rosary will be prayed at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 15, 2022, followed by visitation until 6:00 p.m. at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN.  

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 16, 2022 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 3526 St. Johns Way, South Bend, IN.  Entombment will follow in Highland Cemetery.
