Mary J. Garoutte, 96, of New Carlisle, Indiana, passed away around 11:00 a.m. Central on Friday, August 28, 2026, in Newburgh, IN. Mary was born on January 5, 1930 in Buchanan, Michigan to the late Walter and Helen Dill and moved to New Carlisle, IN where she met and married her late husband Robert L. Garoutte on December 22, 1952. She was a hair stylist while Robert was away in the military and later supported him unconditionally in all his endeavors including successfully purchasing and operating the station that is known today as Garoutte’s Auto and Truck Center.
Mary will always be remembered for her infectious smile, and sassy, tough spirit. She loved playing cards and games with her family and friends, gardening, sewing, bingo, the color purple and her porch duck because it was a great conversation starter. Her greatest joy was loving and serving her family and making sure they had what they needed. She loved her husband, Robert, fiercely and is smiling ear to ear to be reunited with the love of her life, dancing with him in Heaven.
Mary is survived by her three sons; Terry (Debbie) Garoutte of Newburgh, Indiana, Robert (Peggy) Garoutte of New Carlisle, Indiana and Michael Gene Garoutte of New Carlisle, Indiana, her daughter Dawn (Ed) Rice of Indianapolis, Indiana, fifteen grandchildren; Bridgette (Joe) Pollard, Jamie (Colby) Gullen, Troy (Angela) Rice, Jessica (Bobby) Smith, Molly (John) Schellinger, Jacob Michael Rice, Stephen (Ani) Garoutte, Ryan Robert Garoutte, Julie (Derrick) Weyer, Amanda (Aaron) Witmer, Christopher (Jamie) Garoutte, Shawn Barret, Julie (Tom) Brenneman, Michael (Heather) Singleton, Jeff (Kim) Hurlbut and twenty seven great grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Garoutte, daughter in law, Denise Garoutte, and 2 sisters Dora Humbaker and Jeanette Stark.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at the New Carlisle Wesleyan Church. Funeral Services will take place at 12:00 p.m. EDT Saturday in the church. Following the funeral service, burial will take place immediately at the New Carlisle Cemetery.
