Mary Carmola Brehl Obituary

Mary A. Carmola Brehl, age 94, of South Bend, Indiana, a dedicated matriarch, Notre Dame enthusiast, and community member passed away on Wednesday, February 28th, 2024. She was born on April 26th, 1929, in Dover Ohio, to the late Nicholas and Lucrecia (Guinnet) Contini. Mary was preceded in death by her first husband, Anthony A. Carmola, whom she married on August 25th, 1949, and who passed away April 3, 1999, and her second husband, Bernard Brehl, whom she later married on July 1, 2004, and who passed away on July 15th, 2010. She was also preceded in death by one son, Lawrence Carmola and one son in law, Brian J. McSweeney.

Mary is survived by two daughters, Christianne McSweeney of Alexandria, Virginia, and Susanne (Richard) Seall of South Bend, Indiana, and one son, Michael (Michelle) Carmola of Granger, Indiana.  Mary was a proud grandmother to Christopher McSweeney, Nicole (James) Lawler, Molly (Patrick) Kelly, Laurie (Allyson Matthews) Seall, Nicholas (Layne) Carmola, Anthony Carmola and Jacob Carmola, as well as six great-grandchildren, Rya, Keira, Ivey Lawler and Jackson, Claire, and Kathryn Kelly.

Mary cherished her family deeply and was actively involved in their lives.  She loved teaching her grandchildren how to drive her silver Honda and she never missed any of her family’s athletic events, always cheering them on from the sidelines.

Her involvement extended beyond her family, as she was a member of Christ Child Society of South Bend.  Mary was particularly passionate about the Christmas Bazaar, where she joyfully contributed to the community’s festive spirit.

In her earlier years, Mary was very active with the Holy Cross PTA, planning dances, serving “Bun Day,” and being a room mother. Her Italian heritage made Sunday family dinners very important, where she often served her famous spaghetti, meatballs, and apple pie.

Mary’s love for Notre Dame Football was unparalleled.  She worked in the football office for many years, including the memorable year of 1988 when the team won the National Championship.  Her dedication to the university extended beyond football, as she spent 35 years working in various positions, mainly in the athletic department.

One of Mary’s most cherished roles was being tailgate hostess at every Notre Dame home game, where she delighted a huge crowd with her homemade Italian cooking.  Her passion for the Fighting Irish was infectious, and she created lasting memories for all who knew her.

Mary A. Carmola Brehl’s family would like to express their gratitude to Darden Home for providing a loving, safe, and warm environment for Mary, especially to her caregiver Shareen.  They would also like to thank Caring Cove Hospice for their incredible care and support.
