Julio Pablo Benvenuto

Julio Pablo Benvenuto, 84, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026. He was born on September 14, 1941, in Montevideo, Uruguay, to Julio Benvenuto Pittamiglio and Angélica (Riberio) Benvenuto, both deceased. On July 7, 2000, Julio married María Rosa Olivera- Williams, who survives him. Julio is also survived by two daughters: Viviana Benvenuto of Montevideo and Ximena Williams-Olivera of Anchorage; two sons: Aldo and Álvaro, both of Montevideo; two grandchildren: Pedro and Manuel, both of Montevideo.

Julio was a lawyer and the head of the legal department at the State Insurance Bank of Uruguay. He believed that his forty years of experience working at such a large, complex institution had equipped him with the ability to understand the human condition. He was an avid reader with a curious mind. To him, nothing was superfluous or uninteresting. Although he was a brilliant and accomplished lawyer, his true passion was writing. South Bend, Indiana—which he called a “garden city” except in winter—provided him with the opportunity to write, discover the flora of the Midwest, immerse himself in political history, and, above all, engage in discussion with Notre Dame students about a wide range of topics. This delighted his wife, a professor of Latin American literature at the university. Julio was a published novelist. His first novel received praise from critics and readers alike. According to one critic, Rapsodia por el planeta azul (Rhapsody for the Blue Planet) has become a cult classic. He left several novels unpublished.

Among all his achievements and interests, his deep and enduring love for María Rosa was the strongest. Julio and María Rosa met in Montevideo. He had known her since birth because their families were friends. Their love was so deep and genuine that it touched the hearts of everyone who knew them. Though they spent some time apart, they were destined to be together—and that is exactly what happened. There was an unbreakable bond between their hearts and minds. They complemented each other perfectly. They shared their love with their family, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances.

Julio respected life in all its forms. His love for life and learning was contagious. He also had a wonderful sense of humor. We will miss him dearly, but his voice and wisdom will live on.

A celebration of Julio's life will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Carnegie Library, Jesús Latin Grill, and the Carnegie Library Special Events Center, located at 122 N. Hill Street in Mishawaka, Indiana 46544.

Memorial contributions may be made in Julio’s honor to the Smithsonian Institution.
