John Szabo
South Bend - John Szabo 88, of South Bend, In, passed away in Memorial Hospital ICU surrounded by his family at 2:10pm Friday April 22, 2022.
John was born on November 25, 1933 in the Borough of Throop, Pennsylvania to the late Julius and Rose (Voros) Szabo. At the age of 12, John and his family moved to South Bend. On March 12, 1955, he married Lorraine Jaroszewski in Holy Cross Catholic Church in South Bend. John is survived by his wife Lorraine of 67 years celebrated with a surprise party. Also, his son Jerry Szabo and daughter Diane Buford. He was blessed with two granddaughters Alicia Mitschelen and Breanne Buford. Along with his great grandson Isiah, great granddaughter Harlow and great grandson Hudson. Also surviving his sister Rosalie Treber Jurek of South Bend and nieces, nephews and cousins. John was preceded in death by his parents and brother Julius Szabo, sister-in-law Esther and two brother-in-law's Andrew Treber and Eugene Jurek.
John served in the United States Army and was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. He was employed by various local trucking companies as a driver, and retired from Consolidated Freightways in 1997. John was always determined to fix anything that was broken including cars to anything in the house. Sometimes doing it the hard way, but always getting it done. He loved to play golf, and on July 23, 2015 he was presented with a certificate for a Hole-In-One at the Blackthorn Golf Course. He also enjoyed going to the local Casino's and numerous trips to Las Vegas. John also liked to travel visiting many countries, including cruises to various Islands.
A visitation for John will be held on Thursday April 28, 2022 in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr. South Bend, IN 46628 from 4:00 until 8:00 pm. Another short visitation will be held from 9:30 until 10:15 am on Friday April 29, 2022 at the funeral home prior to the mass. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church at 11:00 am on Friday April 29th. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery with full Military Honors.
