Joan A. (Whelan) Dukehart

Joan Anne Dukehart, 90, of New Carlisle, IN passed away on January 17, 2023 at Miller’s Health and Rehab Nursing Home, LaPorte, IN surrounded by family.  Born on March 20, 1932 in Baltimore, MD, Joan was the daughter of the late James Edward Whelan and Mary Agatha (Doonan) Whelan.

On February 7, 1953, in Baltimore, she married the late John R. Dukehart Sr.  Joan, John and the kids moved from Maryland to Indiana in 1969.

Joan is preceded in death by her brother, James T. Whelan Sr. of Columbia, MD; her twin sister, Mary Katherine “Kay” Chester of Abington, MD; and her daughter-in-law, Debra S. Dukehart, of Indianapolis, IN.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Joan Elliott, of Michigan City, IN; her six sons: John II, of Michigan City, IN, Mike of Indianapolis, IN, Tom (Sue) of Rome City, IN, Joe (Beth) of Dobson, NC, Mark (Anne) of Dewitt, MI, and Brian of South Bend, IN, as well as 12 Grandchildren, 6 Great Grandchildren, and 1 Great-Great Grandchild.

A loving mother and devoted wife, Joan spent much of her life raising her seven kids and managing the home front.  There was a period that she worked for Miller’s Merry Manor, New Carlisle, IN and True Value Hardware, LaPorte, IN.  Joan was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout assistant and a March of Dimes and Muscular Dystrophy volunteer.  In her spare time, she loved reading, gardening, baking, art work, and spending time with all of her family.

Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. EST – 2:00 p.m. EST Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 201 S. Filbert Street, New Carlisle, IN, followed by a Catholic Funeral Service at 2:00 p.m. EST in the funeral home.  Burial will follow in St. John Kanty Cemetery, Rolling Prairie, IN.
