James J. "Murph" Murphy Obituary

James J. “Murph” Murphy, 79, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 3:18 a.m. Thursday, November 4, 2021, in Memorial Hospital. Jim was born on May 5, 1942 in Peabody, Massachusetts to James J. Murphy, Sr. and Nora (Harrington) Murphy.  Jim moved from Massachusetts to Chicago, Illinois in 1968 where he was employed as a Gym Teacher at St. Malachy Parish.  He also drove a Charter Bus for 3 years.  Jim retired from the University of Notre Dame in 2010, where he was employed as a Crowd Control Supervisor for 31 years.  On July 7, 1990 he married Nancy L. Binder, who survives.  Jim is also survived by three daughters, Lisa Walsh of Arizona, Denise (Mike) Sanders of South Bend, Indiana and Bethany (Michael) Swanson of Mishawaka, Indiana; one son, Joseph (Judy) Binder of Granger, Indiana; Papa to eight grandchildren, Dawn Babcock, Erik Walsh, Jentry Binder, Stevie Binder, Nicole Watson, Brooke Fraling, Ryan Fraling and Lauren Sanders; eight great-grandchildren,  his sister, Mary Legault of Peabody, Massachusetts; his brother, Dan (Anne Marie) Murphy of Peabody, Massachusetts; three nieces, Christine, Stephanie and Maryann; one nephew Matthew; and two great-nieces, Emily and Maddison.  A Catholic Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 8, 2021 in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana.  Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.  Jim was a member of Christ the King Parish.  He was an avid Notre Dame Fan.  He enjoyed bowling and golfing.  Jim touched a lot of lives thru his job at Notre Dame.
