James Francis O'Donoghue, Jr.

James Francis O’Donoghue, Jr., 86, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 1:45 a.m. Friday, June 29, 2018 in Hospice House.  James was born on January 15, 1932 in Brooklyn, New York to James F. O’Donoghue, Sr. and Jeannette (Sweeney) O'Donoghue.  He retired on July 1, 2006 from the Los Angeles Unified School District, where he was employed as a teacher.  James is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia A. O’Donoghue of Chicago; six daughters, Mary (William) Frailey of Noblesville, Indiana, Maureen (Janie) O’Donoghue of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Shauna O’Hara of Aliso Viejo, California, Erin O’Donoghue of Aliso Viejo, California, Eileen O’Donoghue of Irvine, California, and Meghan (Paul) Pipper of Hendersonville, Tennessee; one son, James (Deana) O’Donoghue, III of Valencia, California; seven grandchildren, Kevin, Joanne and Shane O’Hara; Breanna Frailey; Caitlin and Jenna Pipper; and Adeline O’Donoghue; one brother, Joseph O’Donoghue of Spring Hill, Florida; and by several special nieces and nephews.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 2018 in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.  A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Thursday, in the Kaniewski Funeral  Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a rosary will be prayed at 2:00 p.m.  Cremation will follow with services to be held at a later date at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN.  James was a Korean War Army Veteran.  He was a 1958 graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he was a member of the Glee Club. James was the President of the San Francisco Notre Dame Alumni Club from 1970-1972.  In 2008 he relocated to South Bend for his love of Notre Dame.   He loved baseball and was a huge Los Angeles Dodgers fan.  James was a member of the Screen Actors Guild.  He has appeared in many films, television, stage productions and was a stand in for actor Jack Palance.
