James Edward Smolka, 83, of Mishawaka, IN, passed away peacefully on Friday July 5, 2024 at his home. He was born on July 25, 1940, in South Bend, IN, to the late Clement and Marie (Bloom) Smolka. On June 16, 1979, he married the love of his life, Rose (Humbarger) who survives. Jim is also survived by his daughter, Debby (Corby) Robbins of Edwardsburg, MI, five sons; Bob (Janet) Singer of Montpelier, OH, Mark Singer of Mishawaka, Steve (Sheryl) Singer of Green Cove, FL, Dave (Jane) Singer of New Smyrna Beach, FL and Scott (Jennifer) Singer of South Bend, five sisters; Shirley Jones of Mishawaka, Karen Schwartz and Jan (Rob) Zelasko, both of Pendleton, IN, Verna Kline of Phoenix, AZ and Ida Mercer of Houston, TX and by 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by sisters Lorraine Urbanski, Delores (Frank) Wroblewski, Nancy Speake, brother Jerry (Sharon) Smolka, two stepbrothers Russell and Bill Young and one brother-in-law, Bill Schwartz. Jim worked for AM General until retiring on July 31, 2002.
Jim was well loved by all he met and always left a fond impression. He enjoyed many hobbies including card playing, fishing, bowling, and had a knack for cooking. Gracious and prompt; he never kept anyone waiting. Above all, he was an exceptional role model putting family first. He and Rose hosted many memorable gatherings. He was a humble man with a big heart, putting aside his hobbies to stay by Rose’s side providing her comfort and security when she needed it most.
A visitation will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday July 13, 2024 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. Funeral services for Jim will follow at 11 a.m., in the funeral home, with burial to conclude at Sumption Prairie Cemetery, South Bend.
