James “Jim” Bergan Sr.
James “Jim” Bergan Sr., 82, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family.
Jim was born on May 6, 1944, in South Bend, Indiana, where he was raised. He later resided in Vandalia, Michigan at Birch Lake, but remained deeply connected to the South Bend community he called home throughout his life.
Jim graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1963. His life was marked by strong family ties, lasting friendships, hard work, entrepreneurship, and an enduring love for South Bend.
Jim came from a long standing proud Irish Heritage. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward L. Bergan Sr. and Zelma (Salsbury) Bergan, his sister, Helen Bayman, and his brother, Edward Lawrence Bergan.
Jim was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Linda Kay Bergan (Minix). Together, they built a family and a life filled with love, hard work, friendships, and countless memories. When he married into the Minix family, he made the family feel complete.
Jim was a natural entrepreneur who made a lasting mark on the RV and trailer industries. He was instrumental in the RV industry during his career and a founding member Four Seasons Housing. True to his entrepreneurial spirit, Jim went on to establish and operate businesses of his own.
Among his ventures was Royal Cargo Trailers, where he was involved in the manufacture of cargo trailers and helped build a successful business in the industry. His business ventures also included Middlebury Trailers and H & H Trailers, as well as several other endeavors throughout his career. Jim’s entrepreneurial interests extended beyond the trailer industry, and he also owned and operated mobile home parks in the area.
For Jim, business was more than simply a career. He had an entrepreneurial mind, enjoyed turning ideas into reality, and took great pride in the businesses and relationships he built throughout his life. His determination, independence, and strong work ethic were qualities he passed along to his sons and grandchildren.
Jim was also a man who valued friendship and fellowship. He was a member of the South Bend Maennerchor Club, Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Elks Club, where he enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships that were an important part of his life.
A lifelong and enthusiastic Notre Dame football fan, Jim took great pride in cheering for the Fighting Irish. His love of Notre Dame football was something he enjoyed sharing with family and friends, and Saturdays were often a reason to gather, cheer, and enjoy time together.
In the last few months of his life, Jim found great happiness in his new getaway retreat in South Haven, Michigan, where he and Linda enjoyed the beauty of Lake Michigan. He loved walking, visiting the shops, taking in the beautiful views, and watching the sunsets over the lake while holding Linda's hand. These peaceful days in South Haven gave Jim and Linda a special place to make new memories together and enjoy the beauty around them.
Those who knew Jim will remember him as a man who was proud of his Irish heritage, proud where he came from, proud of what he built, and, above all, proud of his family. From his South Bend roots and his father’s legacy of service to the life he created for his own family, Jim’s life reflected loyalty, perseverance, and a deep love for those closest to him.
Jim is survived by his wife, Linda Kay Bergan; his sons, James Bergan Jr. and his wife, Mandy; Joseph Bergan and his wife, Tracy; and Nicholas Bergan and his wife, Angela; his grandchildren, James III, Lily, Timothy, Kimberly, and Koty; and extended family and many friends who will miss him dearly. As well as his great grandchildren Delaney and Piper.
Jim’s life was one of family, friendship, faith, entrepreneurship, and community. He leaves behind not only the businesses and accomplishments he built, but, more importantly, a family who loved him and a legacy that will continue through his children and grandchildren.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and Linda will miss their nightly walks together at Birch Lake where they lived for over the past twenty years. He will rest in peace at Cedar Grove beneath a Celtic cross brought from Ireland to America by his father.
