Howard S. McFarland

Howard S. McFarland, 81, of North Liberty, Indiana passed away on Monday, November 24, 2025, in his home.  Howard was born on July 23, 1944 in South Bend, Indiana to Howard and Claire (Burkus) McFarland.  Howard graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1963 and enjoyed attending the All Class Reunions over the years. After high school, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 2 years. On October 12, 1985, he married Carol Muessel, who preceeded him in death on November 20th, 2009.  Howard was a man of many interests.  He enjoyed reading about and watching WW2 documentaries.  He enjoyed cooking and working in his garden and fishing with his son at Potato Creek State Park.  He was the owner of HSM Photography and before that owned the Artisan Shop in North Liberty where he designed and built custom wood furniture. Howard is survived by his daughter, Colleen (Jeff) Laderer of South Bend, Indiana; Shannon (Alana) McFarland of Plymouth, Indiana; five grandchildren, Meredith (Justin) Drinkall, Haley (Blake) Smith, Caroline (Ashton) Ruszkowski, Amanda (Owen) Roop and Susie McFarland; two great-grandchildren, Layla Smith and Everett Roop; his previous wife, Susanne Lamb; his sister-in-law, Mickey (Mike) Hay and his sister-in-law, Mary (Ford) Muessel; and his brother in-law, Chuck Muessel.  Howard was preceded in death by his son, Harrison McFarland, his brother and sister - in-law, Pat and Sandy McFarland and his beloved dog, Pepper. The family would like to thank Dawn from Firefly home care and his caregivers, Keri and Jen R. for all their help.  Also, Marissa from Elara nursing care.  Services will be at a later date.
