Henry August Heritz, 66 of South Bend, Indiana passed away after a brief illness surrounded by his family on Sunday, April 19, 2026 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana. He was born on March 11, 1960 in South Bend, Indiana to the late Herbert and Ella (Drager) Heritz. On April 8, 1989 he married Jo Ann Wetter who survives him at Faith Lutheran Church in South Bend. Henry is also survived by one daughter, Shanon (Dennis) Jones of Warsaw, Indiana, one son, Richard (Jamie) Heritz of South Bend, Indiana, two grandchildren, Austin and Tyler Jones, one sister, Connie Dudeck of South Bend, Indiana, one brother, Robert Heritz of Indianapolis, Indiana, two great grandchildren, one niece, Katie Dudeck, two nephews, Carl Dudeck, Jr. and Jeff (Kayla) Heritz, one brother-in-law, Thomas Wetter, Jr (Kristi), and was Uncle Egg to two godsons, Boone and Cole Garner. Henry was also preceded in death by one son, Michael Grembowicz.
After working for Waste Management as a commercial driver for 37 years, he retired in 2025. He enjoyed retirement to the fullest traveling and checking “to-do” things off his list.
He was a member at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he was the vice-president and served as a Deacon.
Henry was known for and passionate about his well-manicured lawn and being the first to put in his vacation days each year to watch March Madness.
His presence could make every moment brighter as he enjoyed life to the fullest no matter what was going on. He always told people, “you may not like me, but you will never forget me” and we never will. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled in many and the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished. Henry was a tissue donor. Not only did he help so many during his life in so many ways, he will continue to do so even after entering his Heavenly Home by helping others.
A visitation for Henry will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026 from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr. South Bend, IN. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at 11:00 am at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 805 S. 29th Street, South Bend, IN 46615. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Henry’s honor to LWML Indiana District, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or The Indiana Donor Network.
