Helen M. VanGundy, 98, of Mishawaka, Indiana passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2025, in Tanglewood Trace Senior Living. Helen was born on November 18, 1926 in Lakeville, Indiana to Francis Henry and Hazel Mae (Fluckey) Taylor, and was a lifelong area resident. She retired from The Associates where she was employed as a bookkeeper for 17 years. She had also worked at Romy Hammes Ford for ten years. On January 29, 1945 she married Walter VanGundy, who preceded her in death on February 13, 1993. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Richards and Elsie Sauer; and one brother, Orra Taylor. Helen is survived by her daughter, Judy Nye of Spring Hill, Florida; two sons, Rex VanGundy and Paul (Kathy) VanGundy both of South Bend, Indiana; six grandchildren, Tracey VanGundy, Tina (Joe) Morales, Jason Heritz, Jamie (Brian) Downs, Paul VanGundy and Matt (Cindy) VanGundy; and twelve great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2025 in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana. Burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. Helen was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a former volunteer at the Chamber of Commerce and The Center for Hospice. She was a past President and former Treasurer for the American Legion Post #50 Auxiliary and a member of the 8 and 40 Salon #156 Chapeaux Passe. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed her family immensely. She will be remembered for her quick wit and sense of humor by all those who knew her.
