George Knoll Metz, 94, of South Bend, Indiana passed away peacefully on Friday, October 22, 2021.  George was born on May 14, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois to the late John and Josephine (Knoll) Metz. Also preceding him in death was a son, James Metz.

On July 23, 1955, he married his loving wife, Rosemary B. Piechocki. George is survived by his wife; daughter Jan (Rick) Verwilst of Niles, Michigan; son Joe (Kim) Metz of South Bend, Indiana; daughter-in-law Donna Metz of South Bend, Indiana; seven grandchildren Fr. Bradley Metz, C.S.C., Christie (Steve) Hough, Ann (Daniel) Driscoll, Laura (Matt) Perron, Vince (Kaitlin) Metz, Samantha (Charlie) Carlin and Andrew (Sydney) Verwilst; eight great-grandchildren Gavin Hough, Wyatt Hough, Julia Driscoll, Jack Driscoll, Luke Driscoll, Nora Perron, Nolan Perron and Owen Perron; his brother John (Jackie) Metz of Carmel, Indiana; and a special niece Maria (Roger) Nawrot of South Bend, Indiana along with their daughters Leigh Ann (Brad) Lunz and Courtney (Nick) Hintz and their children Gabriella Hintz, Collin Hintz and Avery Lunz. George was dearly devoted to family and cherished all of his nieces, nephews and their children.

George served in the United States Navy and Navy Reserves during W.W. II. George retired from Bendix/Allied-Signal, where he was employed as a Draftsman. He was also a Designer at the former Studebaker Corporation and had worked for Ford Motor Company, Dearborn, Michigan. 

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana. Following visitation, his grandson, Fr. Bradley Metz, C.S.C., will officiate at a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 3526 St. Johns Way, South Bend, Indiana. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, where members of the United States Navy will conduct Military Honors. George was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish where he along with his wife, Rosemary, were Eucharistic ministers to the homebound parishioners. He was a member of American Legion Pulaski Post #357 and the St. Joseph Young Men’s Society.  George also enjoyed his role as a longtime Notre Dame captain of ushers, which earned him a lifetime Gold pass to the Notre Dame football games.
