Frances (Wukowich) Mattasits

Frances (Wukowich) Mattasits of South Bend, Indiana passed away on January 24, 2023 in Mooresville, North Carolina. Frances was born on September 4, 1923 in South Bend to the late Robert and Marie (Gruber) Wukowich.

She graduated from Riley High School in 1941 and The Thomas Commercial School of Business.

On October 19, 1946 in Saint Matthew’s Cathedral, South Bend, she married Paul J. Mattasits who preceded her in death on September 15, 1997. Also, a son Brian, preceded her in death on November 21, 1966. Frances is survived by a son Michael Mattasits of Sarasota, Florida, daughter Janet Spencer of Anthem, Arizona, two grandchildren Lisa (Johnathan) Gorman of Mooresville, North Carolina and Jillian Mullen of Carmel, Indiana, a great granddaughter Mackenzie Mullen of Carmel, Indiana, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Her family came first.

She retired in May, 1989 after 20 years at the University of Notre Dame, working at the bookstore, University Press, and Controller’s office. She helped organize the Notre Dame Ladies Golf League.

Frances enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, and golf with the St. Matthew’s Ladies Golf League and the Town and Gown Golf League at the Notre Dame Burke Golf Course as well as Destin, Florida where she spent many a winter.

In her leisure time she delved in all three mediums of art.

She was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church, the University Club of Notre Dame and the Riley Alumni Lunch Bunch.

Frances spent her later years in Mooresville, North Carolina with family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Jude’s Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 30, 2023 with internment to follow at Highland Cemetery.
