Eugene C. Vargo

Eugene C. Vargo, 73, of Mishawaka, Indiana passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2026. He was born on October 17, 1952 in South Bend to the late Eugene J. Vargo and Geraldine “Geri” (Dombrowski) Hillebrand. On December 21, 1989 Eugene married Vivian A. (Sopczynski) Stuber who preceded him in death on July 2, 2023. He was also preceded by his step father, Michael Hilebrand and brother Gary Vargo. Eugene is survived by one daughter, Jessica A. (Scott Vandygriff) Williams of South Bend, Indiana and three granddaughters, Delaney, Myla and Brynnlea Williams.

Gene enjoyed camping with his family, bowling, hunting and playing euchre with his friends. 

A visitation for Eugene will be held on Monday, September 21, 2026 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr. South Bend, IN from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 22 at 10:00 am in the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Following the burial a luncheon will take place at the South Bend Firefighters Association, 4025 Lincoln Way W, South Bend, IN 46628. Memorial contributions may be made in Gene’s honor to the South Bend Firefighters Association.
