He was born on January 1, 1931 to the late Albert and Mary (Ernst) Brandewie in Fort Loramie, OH, and has lived in the South Bend area most of his life after moving from Milwaukee, WI.  Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.

On May 26, 1972, with all the proper permission from the church, he married his loving wife Pilar Nacu in The Philippines.  She survives him after a marriage of 49 years. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a dear friend, Paul Herr of South Bend, IN.

He was an ordained member of the Society of the Divine Word, a member of the Anthropos Institute in Germany, a former member of St. Matthew Cathedral; and a current parishioner at Our Lady of Notre Dame Chapel at Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, IN.

Ernest always said that he produced three “babies” during his lifetime: 1.) he founded an Orientation Center for Missionaries in New Guinea 2.) he initiated the Philippines Quarterly of Culture & Society at San Carlos University in Cebu, Philippines 3.) he wrote a proposal that was approved by the University andled to the creation of a Nursing Degree Program at Indiana University of South Bend.
