Elizabeth Jane (Schubert) O’Brien was born on January 23rd, 1938 in her parent’s home on Ardmore trail in South Bend, IN. Elizabeth joined her loved ones July 31st, 2024 after a long battle with cancer. Elizabeth was the daughter of Fredrick and Lois Schubert. Elizabeth was married to Edward Robert O’Brien for 28 years. Edward and their son Anthony Lynn O’Brien proceeded her in death. Elizabeth is survived by her three daughters Linda (Christopher) Wood of Murphy, North Carolina, Dianna (Frank) Hagedorn of Niles, Michigan and Teresa (Michael) Rhoades of Osceola, Indiana. She is survived by 7 grandchildren, Amie Allahabi, Nakia Lay, Jessica Standring, Aaron Hagedorn, Chelsea Menzie, Whitney Wood, Lindsey Rhoades, 10 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren. Elizabeth was 1 of 12 children, her surviving siblings are Fredrick Schubert of Allegan, Michigan, Susan Creech of Florida, Priscilla Schubert of Mishawaka, Indiana, Sandra Scott of Athens, Ohio and Kevin Schubert of Florida. Her siblings greeting her in heaven are Lois Moore, Joseph Schubert, Thomas Schubert, Cristine Lehman, and two unnamed infant siblings. Elizabeth spent her life as a seamstress and loved crocheting blankets to give to people in need. She was a caring and loving mother and grandmother. Elizabeth had the ability to always see the best in everyone in her life, always willing to give a helping hand. Elizabeth worked hard to maintain loving relationships with all her nieces and nephews which exceed 35 family members. Elizabeth faced great hardships as an adult, however she made sure her children and their children always came first. She will be greatly missed by her family who loves her dearly.
A visitation for Elizabeth will be held on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr. South Bend, IN from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm in the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking that you make a donation to the Mott Save a Heart Campaign Fund in Elizabeth’s honor, as her happiest memory was the University of Michigan saving her great grandson Hayden Lay’s life who was born with a congenital heart defect.
