Dwight Leo Mood, 68, of South Bend, Indiana passed away suddenly on Monday, April 27, 2026. He was born on September 8, 1957 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Dwight Leo and Ellen Sue (Martin) Mood, Sr. In 1960 the family moved to Bloomington, Indiana. He was raised in both Bloomington and Orleans, Indiana on the Robert and Doris Martin Family Farm. During his time spent on the farm he learned a very strong work ethic from his grandfather.
Dwight graduated in 1976 from Bloomington High School South. In 1976 he enrolled at Indiana University where he earned a four-year Varsity Letter running track. He graduated from Indiana with a Bachelor of Science in Business Education. After college Dwight took a teaching internship on a Navajo Indiana Reservation in Arizona. After completing his internship Dwight enlisted in The Indiana Army National Guard.
While he was deployed in Bosnia, he met his future wife Dalida Nuhanovic. His son Robert was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia while Dwight was on his last deployment in Afghanistan. Dwight was honorably discharged and retired from The United States Army in 2012. Following his service, Dwight briefly taught at Columbus East High School and Culver Military Academy before taking a teaching/coaching position in South Bend. He spent most of his teaching and coaching career at Clay High School. His last job was spent teaching in Elkhart at the Pierre Moran Middle School where he was respected and loved by his students and staff. Dwight was very close with his colleagues at Clay High. They became family to him and Dalida in which they still are very close with. They have stayed “Clay Strong”.
Outside of his service in the Army and teaching jobs, he had a love of cars and motorcycles. Dwight had a group of biker friends that took many rides together. Outside of his family, Dwight’s biggest passion was cars, especially Corvettes and IU Football.
In 2007 he married Dalida Nuhanovic who survives him. Dwight is also survived by one daughter, Mellie Mood of Mishawaka, Indiana, one son, Robert Mood of South Bend, Indiana, his mother Ellen Sue Mood, sister, Pauline Sue (Brian) Jones, brother, Robert “Bobby” Mood and his half-brother, Dwayne Mood. Dwight was preceded in death by his father, Dwight, Sr.
A visitation for Dwight will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr. South Bend, IN from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 pm during the visitation with Pastor Tyler Downing officiating. Following the prayer service a time of sharing will be held where family and friends are welcome to share a brief story or heartfelt message about Dwight. On Friday, May 8, 2026 at 11:00 am a graveside service with Military Honors will be held at Highland Cemetery 2257 Portage Ave, South Bend, IN. Anyone that would like to attend the graveside service should go directly to Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Dwight’s honor to Vehicles for Veterans or any other Veteran Charity of the donor’s choice.
