Charles Alan Pressler, 78, of South Bend, IN, passed away Friday, May 30, 2025, at Ernestine M. Raclin House surrounded by his family whom he loved dearly. Charles was born November 8, 1946, to Paul and Lois Pressler in Elkhart, IN. He is survived by a sister, Carolyn (Sue), but lost his other sister, Terra, in February of 2022.
After graduating high school in 1964, he served as a military intelligence officer in the Army for four years. His passion for education led to a BA from Duquesne, MA, from the University of Chicago, and a PhD from the University of Notre Dame, and a teaching career as a professor of philosophy and sociology at universities across Indiana, including Notre Dame, Trine, and Purdue. Later in life, he worked as a substitute teacher at schools across South Bend to satisfy his love for teaching. He was more than just a teacher, as he had many talents. He could read a 35-chapter book in ten minutes, loved playing the tuba, and learned multiple languages, including Russian and German. He was always eager to soak up any knowledge and pass it on to the next.
Chuck married the love of his life, Patricia Webster, on June 25, 1988. Together they shared six amazing children: Zachary (Molly), Brina, Paige (Tiny), Benjamin, Halle (Jace), Gabriel (Katie), plus two honorary children Casey Tanner and Chris Wright. Charles wasn’t just a husband and father, he was also papa to seven grandchildren who adored him: Brooklyne, Levi, Egypt, Camila, Amira, Zachary Jr., and Charles Jr. Both his children and grandchildren considered him their Superman. Spoon feeding them at all hours of the night when were they were sick to helping them with every day adult problems, he was always there. He had a special bond and love for each child’s specific interests and needs and was the embodiment of unconditional love.
Charles was strong in faith and an active member at the New Apostolic Church. His walk with God has been a true blessing as he was a pillar to not just his family, but to the entire community. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. Please join us in sending him home to God at 2pm on June 9, 2025 at the New Apostolic Church 5602 Ironwood Dr., South Bend, IN.
