Doris Ann Milewski

Doris Ann Milewski, 93, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 5:33 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2026, in her home.  Doris was born on March 20, 1933 in South Bend, Indiana to Bernard L. and Mary (Gundeck) Milewski, and was a lifelong resident.  She retired in 1992 from the South Bend School Corporation, where she was employed as a 5th Grade Teacher and Music Teacher for over 30 years.  Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Mary Milewski; her sister, Lorraine Milewski Fredlake; and her Godmother, Martha Kujawski.  Doris is survived by her nieces and nephews, Mark (Kathy) Fredlake, Peter (Mary) Fredlake, David (Margo) Fredlake, Mary T. (Mike) Souchek, Christopher (Michele) Fredlake, Barbara (Dave) Vandeleur, and James (Laurel) Fredlake; seventeen great-nieces and great-nephews; twenty-one  great great-nieces and great-great nephews; and her close friend Patricia Stypczynski.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2026 in St. Hedwig Church. Doris will be buried next to her parents in St. Joseph Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m.  Visitation will also take place from 9:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Friday in the church.  Doris received her B.A. in Music Education from the College of St. Scholastica and her M.A.  in Education from the University of Notre Dame. She also attended Indiana University South Bend, St. Mary’s College and Seattle University. She was a member of St. Hedwig Parish and the Rosary Society.  Doris was the church organist for many years and sang in the St. Hedwig Choir during the 1970’s to the present. In the 1990’s Doris took over as the Choir/Music director for St. Hedwig Church. Together Doris and Patti Stypczynski, her neighbor, friend, and Church Cantor, provided music for weekend Masses, Funerals and Weddings for 50 years.  They also worked at Choir and Rosary Parish Polish Festivals for many years and accompanied dance classes at Marie Buczkowski’s School of Dance. Doris was a member of NEA (National Education Association, AFT (American Federation of Teachers) St. Scholastica Alumni Association, Chopin Fine Arts Club and the St. Joseph’s Young Mens Society. Memorial Contributions should be directed to St. Hedwig Church.
