Donald (Don) Chester Sniegowski was born on February 12, 1935 in Toledo, Ohio. He passed away in South Bend, Indiana on September 18, 2018 at the age of 83. He was the oldest son of Chester and Josephine Sniegowski (nee Szymanowski) and brother to Loretta Schwind (nee Sniegowski) and Robert Sniegowski. He married Barbara Sniegowski (nee Nowakowski) in 1958. He is survived by his wife Barbara, his brother Robert Sniegowski and family, his sons Paul and Peter Sniegowski, daughter Anne Costello and their families. He was a grandfather to nine children and uncle to many nieces and nephews of the extended Sniegowski and Nowakowski families. He was, in the words of one of his grandchildren, considered the center of gravity in his immediate family.
Don attended Central Catholic High School in Toledo, Ohio, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his doctoral degree from Yale University. In 1956 he studied at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. He was a career-long English professor at the University of Notre Dame where he won many teaching awards. He also served as Assistant Dean for the College of Arts and Letters. He was known to students and colleagues alike as the epitome of an informed, intelligent, engaging teacher and life-long mentor. He was also an active and respected volunteer within the South Bend community.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8PM on Friday, September 21, 2018 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, 46628. The funeral service will also be held at the Kaniewski Funeral Home at 10AM on Saturday, September 22, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Near Northeast Neighborhood Center (South Bend, IN), the St. Joseph County Public Library or the Food Bank of Northern Indiana.
