Donald Walter Obituary

Donald Walter, a community leader, dedicated philanthropist and beloved uncle and friend, passed away peacefully in Mt. Vernon, WA on Monday December 15, 2025, at the age of 93.

Born with a tireless work ethic, Don was a graduate of Central Catholic High School in South Bend. He went on to attend the University of Notre Dame, working as a handyman to put himself through both his undergraduate studies and Notre Dame Law School, where he graduated in 1956.

Don began a distinguished banking career in the First Bank trust department under the mentorship of his friend Judd Leighton. His ambition led him to Niles MI where he established a new trust department. He eventually rose to become the President and CEO of what became Pacesetter Bank. Under his leadership, the multi-billion dollar holding company flourished before its sale in 1982 to what is now Fifth Third Bank.

An entrepreneur at heart, Don then founded one of the first registered investment advisory firms in the Michiana area, now known as Walter & Keenan Wealth Management. Over his many years as an advisor, Don guided families with wisdom and integrity. His legacy of service extends through several private charitable foundations that he helped to establish and manage, which will continue to support our community for many years to come.

Don was a lifelong explorer who loved to travel the world with his beloved sister Judy Keenan (who passed in 2014) and great-nephew Franklin Walter (Andrea) who survives. Though he never married, Don’s life was rich with deep friendships and a devoted family. For the past 20 years Don lived with his nephew Charlie and his wife Kay in a small rural community in NW Washington state. He had many friends who all referred to him affectionately as “Unc”. He will be missed by them all.

Don is survived by his nephews Charles Walter (Kay), James Keenan (Melinda), Mike Keenan (Julia), Kevin Keenan (Ann); his niece Kate Walter and a large and loving circle of great-nieces, great-nephews and newly arrived great-grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his older brother Raymond Walter and parents Frances and Charles Walter. Don leaves behind a legacy of professional excellence and quiet generosity that will be felt for generations to come.

The family is planning a private burial and arrangements are pending with Kaniewski Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to The CASIE Center at 533 N. Niles, Ave in South Bend.
