Dolores A. Nowak

August 9, 1928 ~ February 10, 2024 (age 95) 95 Years Old

Dolores A. Nowak Obituary

Our dear mother DOLORES A NOWAK gained her angel wings on February 10th, 2024. She was 95 years old.
Her life started on August 9th, 1928 in Michigan City Indiana. She was one of 12 children. One sister, Victoria Lazarek, of LaPorte Indiana survives.
On January 14th, 1950 she married Edmund Nowak. Moe and Norka were married for 64 years before his passing in 2014. Their loving union produced 5 children.
Dolores had many jobs in her lifetime but the one she is most remembered for is being a hairdresser. She owned and operated Nowak’s Beauty Salon from her home for 20 plus years.
Mom worked hard all of her life and it showed in her beautiful yard and home. She also loved and enjoyed gardening. Busia/mom was always willing to help her children or grandchildren with any projects they had.
Surviving Mrs. Nowak are her children Diane Hurlbutt, Michele Nowak (Penny Booher), and Kurt Nowak (Beverly). She was Busia to 4 grandchildren Bryan (Angie) Hurlbutt, Mike (Marcie) Hurlbutt, Erin (Mike) Govier, Matt (Traci) Nowak and one step grandchild Angela Korkhouse. Additionally she was great Busia to 10 and to 5 step great grandchildren. Also surviving is her brother-in-law William Granning of Hudson Florida and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her to heaven are her husband Edmund Nowak, twin sons Michael and Paul, a son-in-law Ryan Hurlbutt, a daughter-in-law Terri Nowak, her parents Joseph and Lucille Hayman and ten siblings.
In the beginning of their marriage it was a struggle to make ends meet. One day a beggar came to her door  and asked if she could spare a  sandwich. She had to deny his request because she had three kids to feed and didn’t have anything extra. That decision of hers was always regretted. So, instead of flowers please donate in her honor/memory to your local food bank or to your church. It would have been gratifying to her to know she helped feed someone.
Mom was loved by so many people. Thank you everyone for your kind words, prayers and or visits. We would also like to thank the many staff members at Hamilton Grove (New Carlisle) and Hospice Michiana for their care, support and compassion. Especially in her final days. Additionally, thanks to Kaniewski Funeral Home for guiding us through this difficult time.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 19, 2024 in Holy Family Church.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.  A visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. A visitation will also be held from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Monday in Holy Family Church.
