David Villarreal
March 11, 1954 – February 28, 2024

After 69 years of life, David Villarreal of New Carlisle passed away at home on February 28, 2024.

David was born in Bloomington, Indiana, on March 11, 1954, as the eldest son of Raul and Faith (Yeager) Villarreal. He graduated from Morton High School in 1972 and attended Grinnell University and Eastern Montana College. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Philosophy from the latter in 1980.

He enlisted in the US Army on March 20, 1981, where he met Kathleen (Kathy) McCloud, who became his wife in January 1982. From their union came Hector in December 1982, Miranda in September 1984, Ramona in August 1988, and Charles in May 1992.

David’s military career led the family to several interesting postings, including Maryland, West Germany, Colorado, Kentucky, Alabama, and Washington where he retired July 31, 2001 as Sgt. First Class. Over his 20-year career, he earned the Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal, (awarded twice); Army Achievement Medal, (awarded twice); National Defense Service Medal; Southwest Asia Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars; NCO Professional Development Ribbon III; Army Service ribbon; Army Good Conduct Medal (sixth award); Overseas Service Ribbon; Kuwait Liberation Medal; Air Assault Badge; and Driver Mechanic Badge with Driver-W Bar.

After his retirement and divorce from Kathleen, David lived in Las Vegas before settling near several siblings and their children in New Carlisle, Indiana.

In November 2008, he married Susan Tatgenhorst and welcomed her daughters Alexis and Arianna into his life; David and Susan divorced in March 2020.

His lifelong hobbies included running, music, poker, holistic food and medicine, and politics. David loved his country and supported those who served in its defense. He was an active member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Vets, and several social clubs.

David is survived by his natural children, Hector (Kim), Miranda (Scott), Ramona (Chris), Charles (Cydnee), and his grandchildren, Warwick and Bronwyn (Miranda).

His surviving siblings include Raul, Cyndi (Jake), Linda (Jim), Lori (Scott), and Vicki (Larry). Their children are Jordan and Andrea (Raul); Greg, Tyson, and Rachel (Cyndi); Holly and Allison (Linda); Joe and Jake (Lori); and Ryan and Victoria “Nay” (Vicki). David was predeceased by his parents and nephew, Shayne (Vicki).

Visitation will occur from 6 – 9 pm on March 6, with additional visitation at noon and memorial services at 2 pm at Kaniewski Funeral Home in New Carlisle on March 7. The family is grateful for the outpouring of sympathy from Dave’s friends and community.
