Daniel W. Allin

Daniel W. Allin, 83, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 3:15 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2026 in Harmony at Elkhart, following an illness.

Dan was born on December 31, 1942 to the late James Frederick and Irene Elaine (Heiney) Allin in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong area resident.  He was raised in Beacon Heights and on Navarre Street, where many friendships were started for Dan.  Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine Forrer; three brothers, Richard J., James F., and Robin K. “Bunky” Allin; and two nephews, Tom and Ronald Forrer.

He graduated in 1961 from South Bend Central High School, where he played both basketball and baseball. Dan then received an associate’s degree from I. U. S. B.

He retired in June 2003 from the Bendix Corp., where he worked for 35 years. Following retirement, he worked for the Bayer Company for some years.

Dan was married to Katherine Jones Andrews for eight years.  Dan is survived by his sister, Sharon S. (LeRoy) Baker of Fort Myers Beach, FL; nieces & nephews, Douglas Allin; Barbara Wolf; Jon Forrer; Robin Norton; Fred and Ted Forrer; Kathi and Paul Allin; Kerry and Scott Allin; Brenda Hickman; Jay Baker; Julie Oberlin; and Jill Begeman.

He played two years of Minor League Baseball in Florida for the Philadelphia Phillies organization, where he was drafted as a pitcher.  One of his fondest memories was rooming with Ferguson Jenkins while playing in the minor league.  He also played and pitched softball for 25 years.

Uncle Danny loved sports, animals, and airplanes.  He had a lifetime fascination with aviation. He supported Animal Causes since 1990. 

Conversation was his number one gift.  He could talk to anyone about anything. Adjusting to new situations and change was not easy for Dan.  Family and friends learned to accommodate his style.  Dan had friends from Beacon Heights, Madison Grade School, Central High Days, and his softball teams.  He was fortunate to keep those connections during his lifetime.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Friday, August 28, 2026 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home.  Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, South Bend, IN.
