Daniel Thomas Kovach, age 37, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, August 7th, 2024. Daniel was born May 12th, 1987 in Mishawaka to Thomas and Kathleen (Schoff) Kovach of South Bend.
Daniel served in the U.S. Air Force from 2007 to 2010, completing intensive training to become an airborne cryptologic linguist specialist. While in the military, he earned an associate degree in the Korean Language at the Defense Language Institute in Presidio of MonteRey. He graduated top of his class and was awarded the program’s highest honor, the Korean Consul General Award. He was also awarded the Air Force Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal with one service star.
Daniel went on to graduate from Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in 2014. He was an avid outdoorsman, and loved to hike, camp, and mountain bike in the mountains of North Carolina; he had even hiked solo for a week on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina and Virginia.
Daniel also enjoyed playing classical guitar, and taking walks with his dogs, Samson, Oliver, and Bernard. Daniel will be remembered by his loved ones for his great sense of humor, brilliant intellect, and kind heart.
Daniel is survived by his wife, Aimee Kovach, and her children, Karlie and Hunter. He is also survived by his mother, Kathleen (Schoff) Van Buskirk; his sisters, Olivia Walsh (Nathan) and Emma Van Buskirk; his step family, Matt Van Buskirk and Kate Van Buskirk; his grandmother, Anita (McCalment) DeMunck; his step grandmother, Donna Schoff, two uncles, Greg Schoff and Andrew Schoff; and one aunt, Pat Gragg (Roy).
Daniel was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Kovach; his grandfather, Dale Schoff; his grandparents Edward Kovach and Alice (Barnes) Kovach; his step grandfather Edgar DeMunck; and his uncle, William Kovach.
