Charles "Chuck" L. Baumgartner, Jr.

Charles “Chuck” L. Baumgartner, Jr. ,90, of South Bend, Indiana until moving to Mishawaka, Indiana in 2019, passed away on Monday, March 22, 2021. Chuck was born on October 9, 1930 in South Bend, Indiana to the late Charles L., Sr., and Mary (Taylor) Baumgartner. On May 16, 1953 in St. Matthew Cathedral, he married Elaine Schneider, who survives. Chuck is also survived by two daughters, Connie (Dennis) Bruner of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Linda (Peter) Melsa of Niles, Michigan; two sons, Doug (Cindy) Baumgartner of South Bend, Indiana, Phillip (Sue) Baumgartner of Mishawaka, Indiana; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Richard Baumgartner. Chuck was also preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Kathryn Skibbe, June Brafman and Sister Veronica Baumgartner; and three brothers, Fred, John and James Baumgartner.

Chuck was a United States Marine Corps Veteran, serving in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for many years, where he was a member of the choir. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #553 for nearly sixty years, where he attained 4th Degree membership. Chuck spent most of his life working as a plumber. He worked most of his career with Braunsdorf and Sons Plumbing and Heating. Chuck was a member of UA Local 172 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, receiving his sixty-five-year pin in 2019.

A visitation for Chuck will be held on Friday, March 26, 2021 from 4:00 until 8:00 pm at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr., South Bend, Indiana. A rosary will be prayed at 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 10:00 am in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 3526 St. Johns Way, South Bend, Indiana 46628 or Caregiver Companion, 612 Wabash Ave, Lafayette, Indiana 47905 in Chuck’s honor.
