Charles Neary Obituary

Charles W. "Chuck" Neary, 94, of South Bend, passed away on Tuesday March 5, 2024 at Wellbrooke of South Bend.  He was born on June 4, 1929, in LaPorte, IN, to the late Charles Joseph and Loretta C. (Vollrath) Neary.  On October 15, 1949 he married Delores Mathew, who preceded him in death on December 13, 2012.  He attended St. Joseph Grade School in LaPorte and in 1947 he graduated from Central Catholic High School South Bend (now St. Joseph High School).  He attended the University of Notre Dame and Indiana University.  Chuck served during the Korean War and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal, and the National Defense Medal.  He received a battlefield promotion to Sergeant.  Charles entered the Indiana State Police in 1958. His career was mainly in the investigative field, rising to the rank of Major, Commander of the Investigation Division.  He served 24 plus years and was awarded the "Sagamore of the Wabash" by Gov. Robert Orr in 1983.  Chuck became Executive Director of MAGLOCLEN, an eight state intelligence unit in Philadelphia, PA.  He returned to Indiana as Deputy Superintendent at the Indiana State Prison, then Chief of Internal Affairs for the Department of Correction for 7 years.  He did investigations and security for the Hoosier Lottery for 10 years and worked at the Notre Dame Burke Golf course for 11 years.  Throughout his lifetime he was always involved in church and youth activities.  He coached baseball at Corpus Christi School, conducted flag football, served on the parish council, wrote the 1st parish constitution, started the school library, and sang in the choir.  When his assignment changed his locale, he stayed active, and sang in the choir at St. Edwards Church in Lowell, Indiana.  He was the President of the Parish Council at St. Susanna in Plainfield, IN, and a lector and cantor, and taught confirmation classes.  Later he sang solo at St. Gabriel Church in Indianapolis and St. Thomas More Church in Pottstown, PA, where he was a lector and sang in the choir, and St. John the Baptist, South Bend, serving on the parish council, and was cantor, Eucharistic minister, lector, and choir member. He is survived by his two daughters, Linda (Rick) Hilton of Wolfeboro, NH and Colleen (John) Sundquist of West Lafayette, IN, his two sons, Terry (Diane) Neary of Granger, IN/Phoenix, AZ and Patrick (Judy) Neary of Ajijic, Mexico, and seven grandchildren:  Travis (Jaime) Neary of Paw Paw, MI, Kellee (Henry) Lowry of Indianapolis, IN, Guinevere (Andy) Hilton Campbell, Julie (Steve) Hilton Podbielski, Morgain (Cody) Clegg (Loveland, Ohio), Aisley (Steve) Gash (Ellicott City, Maryland), and Bridget Ann Sundquistof West Lafayette, IN, and nine great-grandchildren:  Annabelle Neary, Audrey and Theo Rohr, Ian Clegg, Henry and Quinn Gash, Leonora Podbielski, and Finn and Bodhi Boston, three sisters:  Catherine (Herb) Schumann of Merrillville, IN, Caroline (Mike) Coughlan of South Bend and Geraldine (Barry) Kiernan of Valparaiso, IN, a brother, Dennis (Suzanne) Neary of Carmel, IN and three sisters-in-law, Judy and Lizbeth Neary both of LaPorte, IN and Sally Neary of Ohio.  He also leaves behind his constant companion in his later years, Sharon Greaf, who loved him as much as he loved her.   A Funeral Mass will take place at 10 am on Thursday, March 14 at Christ the King Catholic Church in South Bend, IN.  Visitation will be at Kaniewski Funeral Home in South Bend on Wednesday, March 13 from 4- 7 pm.  A Memorial Mass, Celebration of Chuck's Life and interment will be held in early July, exact date to be announced.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, South Bend.  To send online condolences, please visithttp://www.kaniewski.com.
