Caroline L. Coughlan

Caroline L. Coughlan, 84, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 3:30 a.m. Thursday, September 4, 2025, in her home.  Caroline was born on February 5, 1941 in LaPorte, Indiana to Charles J. and Loretta (Vollrath) Neary.  She retired on July 31, 2007 as an Elementary Administrator from the Elkhart Community Schools.  She had also been a Catholic and Public School Teacher for over 50 years.  On July 26, 1974 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte, Indiana, she married Michael J. Coughlan, who preceded her in death on February 23, 2019.  She was also preceded in death by twelve brothers and sisters.  Caroline is survived by her three sons, Terence C. (Nichole) Coughlan of Hillsborough, North Carolina, Kevin P. (Cathlin) Coughlan and Michael F. Coughlan both of South Bend, Indiana; five grandchildren, Maeve (Robert “Tripp” Spivey, III) Coughlan, Eamon Coughlan, Kitty Coughlan, Mac Coughlan and Terry Coughlan; and two sisters, Kay (Herb) Schumann of Schereville, Indiana and Geri Kierman of Valparaiso, Indiana. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2025, in the Sacred Heart Parish Center Chapel, Notre Dame, Indiana.  Caroline’s family will receive visitors from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Sacred Heart Parish Center.  Caroline was a member of Sacred Heart Parish.  She loved her grandchildren and her dog, Orla.  Caroline enjoyed telling stories about her family’s history.
