Brother Thomas David Maddix, C.S.C.

Brother Thomas David Maddix, C.S.C. age 78, passed away on July 3, 2025 at Dujarié House at Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, IN. He was born in Providence, RI to William T Maddix and Mary Louise (Powers) Maddix, the oldest of five children and was raised in Manly, IA. He attended Sacred Heart School in Manly and spent two years at Holy Family H.S. in Mason, IA. The final two years of high school were at Newman H. S. in Mason, graduating in 1964. He entered the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1965 making perpetual profession of vows in May 1972. In 1968, he graduated from St. Edward University, Austin, TX and in 1974, he received an MA in English from the University of Notre Dame. In 1968, he was assigned to join the faculty at Gilmour Academy, Gates Mills, OH. In 1975, he spent one year at Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley, CA obtaining a Certificate in Theological Studies. In 1976, he was appointed the Director of Vocations and Formation, Notre Dame, IN for the Brothers’ Society of the Congregation of Holy Cross. He founded the Solitude of St. Joseph, Notre Dame, IN in 1981 and was its first director. That same year, he joined the faculty at Holy Cross Junior College (now Holy Cross College). In 1985, he returned to Berkeley, CA to begin doctoral studies at the Pacific School of Religion. For the next two years, he was on the faculty of the School of Applied Theology, Berkeley, CA. In 1989, he began a twenty-nine-year ministry with the Catholic Health Care System in Canada. During this tenure, he held many positions: Executive Director, Catholic Bible College of Canada, Canmore, Alberta, Director of Organizational Ethics, Caritas Health Group, Edmonton, Alberta, Director of Mission Services, Alberta Catholic Hospitals Foundation, Adjunct Professor, St. Stephen’s Theological College, Edmonton, Alberta, Vice President, Caritas Health Group, Edmonton, Alberta, Vice President, Providence Health Care, Vancouver, British Columbia, and Health Care Consultant and Presenter, Vancouver, British Columbia. He retired in 2019 in Vancouver, British Columbia and came to Dujarié House, Notre Dame, IN in October 2024.
Brother Thomas is preceded in death by his parents and his brother John. He is survived by two sisters Helen Maddix (Kathy Giese), Mary Soliere and his brother Bill, and his niece Helen Hansen-Maddix and two nephews Michael and Devin Soliere.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 12, at St. Joseph Chapel, Holy Cross College from 9:30-10:30 am on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will then follow with interment afterward in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at the Village. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
