Brother Richard Lee Armstrong, C.S.C. Obituary

Brother Richard Lee Armstrong, died on June 19, 2024 at Columba Hall at Notre Dame. He was 77. Brother Richard was born the younger of two boys in Evansville, Indiana on July 16, 1946 to Earl and Ann (Brenner) Armstrong, Attending Holy Rosary Elementary School (1952-1960). Brother Richard graduated from Reitz Memorial High School, Evansville in 1964. In June of 1964, he entered the Congregation of Holy Cross as a Brother, taking final vows in November of 1971. 

As a scholastic brother in 1967, Br. Richard began work for an associate’s degree at Holy Cross Junior College (now Holy Cross College) with additional academic work completed at DePaul University, Chicago, IL to earn his bachelor’s degree. In 1981 he completed a master’s degree in spirituality at Mundelein College. For 55 of his 59 years of religious life, he had only two assignments. He was on the faculty at Holy Trinity High School from 1970-1986, and at André House of Hospitality, a ministry to the poor, in Phoenix, Arizona, where he served for over 35 years. Richard is preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Ronald. He is survived by Ronald’s children: Mark Armstrong, Michael Armstrong, and Lynn Armstrong Mulderry.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at St. Joseph Chapel, Holy Cross College from 9:30 to 10:30 am. The Mass of Resurrection will follow with interment afterward in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at Holy Village. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. The funeral mass will be livestreamed. A link will be provided before the funeral.
