Brother John May C.S.C. Obituary

Brother John Leo May, C.S.C.

May 19, 1940 – June 30, 2018

Brother John Leo May, C.S.C., age 78, died on June 30, 2018 at Dujarie House, in Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, Indiana. He was born in Monroe, Michigan on May 19, 1940, the son of Charles A. and Leona (Bruck) May. He attended St. Joseph Elementary School in Maybee, Michigan and graduated from Catholic Central High School in Monroe, in June 1957 and also studied for two years at the Monroe Conservatory of Music. In the summer after graduation, he worked with the Holy Cross Brothers at their Notre Dame Camp, in Bankson Lake, Michigan. He had been influenced by the Brothers during high school and decided to join Holy Cross. He went to Sacred Heart Juniorate in Watertown, Wisconsin and St. Joseph’s Novitiate in Rolling Prairie, Indiana where he received the habit of the Brothers on August 15, 1957 and he made his first profession of vows as a Holy Cross Brother on August 16, 1958. He began his college studies at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas and transferred to complete his studies at Notre Dame. In 1961 he joined the founding faculty at the new Holy Cross High School in River Grove, Illinois and in 1965 he served with the first faculty for five years at Bishop David High School in Louisville, Kentucky. Brother John earned his master’s degree in English and Administration  from Butler University in Indianapolis with graduate studies at the University of Minnesota, Boston College, University of Akron and DePaul University. John’s ministry assignments on the of the new schools and faculties provided administrative experiences which were used in assignments at the new Archbishop Hoban High in Akron for 8 years and at Gilmour Academy for the 17 years in administration, business management, and financial matters. His competence and reputation caught the eye of the Provincial, Brother William Geenen, who asked Brother John to come to Notre Dame as a member of the Province Development Office and become the Director of Planning and Mission Effectiveness for the Holy Cross Village.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at Our Lady of Holy Cross Chapel from 9:00 to 10:30 am on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will then follow with interment afterward in St. Joseph’s Cemetery of the Village. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
