BROTHER CARLOS LUIS PARRILLA, C.S.C.

December 11, 1943 – December 31, 2025

Notre Dame, IN – Brother Carlos Luis Parrilla, C.S.C., 82, died at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, IN on December 31, 2025. He had been ill for several days.

Brother Carlos was born in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico to Timoteo Parrilla-Fuentes and Mercedes (Quiňones) Parrilla and was the oldest of four children. After graduating from Admiral King High School in Lorain, OH in 1962, he entered the juniorate program for the Brothers of Holy Cross in Watertown, WI. He received the habit at St. Joseph Novitiate on January 25, 1963 and professed first vows on January 26, 1964. He graduated from St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX in 1966.

After graduation Brother Carlos was assigned to the faculty at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, OH. In 1967, he became a faculty member at St. Joseph High School in South Bend, IN where he spent the next twelve years. In 1979, he was assigned to St. Edward High School in Lakewood, OH and was on the faculty for fourteen years. From 1985-1988 he served as the Coordinator for Hispanic Youth in the Diocese of Cleveland, OH, and from 1988-1992 was a faculty member at Erie Catholic High School in Cleveland, OH. He then served as Director of Religious Education at St. Mary Parish in Lorain, OH from 1993-1999 after which he returned to Archbishop Hoban High School until 2001 when he was appointed Director of Vocations for the Brothers of the Midwest Province. In 2004, he returned again to Archbishop Hoban High School as campus minister. He became the Director of Hispanic Ministry for the Diocese of Charleston, SC in 2006-2009, and then returned to Notre Dame as Director of Vocations and Director of Bessette House of Discernment until 2014. He was then appointed Superior of Schubert Villa/Dujarié House, at Holy Cross Village. He retired in 2020, and lived at Holy Cross Village until his death in 2025.

Preceding Brother Carlos in death are his parents and his brothers Juan and Eliezer Parrilla and many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his sister Maria Isabel Parrilla-Nolte (husband Michael) and his brother Jose Parrilla (wife Muriel); his nephews John Anthony Parrilla (wife Gina) Marco Parrilla and Juan Carlos Parrilla; his nieces Toinette Parrilla, Laura Klopp-Taylor (husband Brent), Cristina Parrilla-Contreras (husband Rene), Carla Parrilla-Tiona (husband Chris); his great nephews Anthony Parrilla (wife Jennifer), Nicholas Parrilla (wife Hannah), Jonathan Parrilla (wife Kathryn), Christopher Colōn, Chase Taylor, Micah and Kevin Haupt; his great nieces Alexis Klein (husband Travis), Peyton Taylor, Alyse Taylor, Ava Contreras, Renee Parrilla and Carla Parrilla, and two great-great-grand nephews Kellin Parrilla and Bryce Vonlehmden.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at St. Joseph Chapel, Holy Cross College from 9:00-10:00 am on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will then follow with interment afterward in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at the Village. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
