Basil “Buck” Raymond Shepherd, 74, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 1:12 a.m. Thursday, June 16, 2022 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

He was born on January 6, 1948 to the late Basil Leroy and Iris May (Strauss) Shepherd in Three Oaks, MI, and has been a lifelong South Bend area resident.  Along with his parents; he was preceded in death by two sisters, Susan Huddleston; Debbie Madlem; and a niece, Judy Lynne Kight.  

Buck was a U.S. Army Vietnam War Veteran, where he proudly served his country from July 4, 1968- July 9, 1969.  He was then stationed at Fort Knox, KY until January 29, 1971.

Buck retired in May 2015 as the owner/operator of Shepherd Trucking - leased to Sycamore Specialized Carriers.  He was a Truck Driver for over 40 years.  

On June 8, 1968, he married Jeannette Csaszar at Lydick United Missionary Church in Lydick, IN.  Buck is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Jeannette Shepherd of South Bend, IN; two daughters, Bethany Ann (Mike) Franks of Iuka, MS; Rebecca Ann (Chris) Kaade of Queen Creek, AZ; two sons, Jeffery Raymond Basil (Megan) Shepherd of South Bend, IN; Todd Raymond Joseph (Angela) Shepherd of South Bend, IN; 13 grandchildren, Austin and Bryan Franks; Kayla and Alexis “Lexi” Kaade; Emily, Edisyn, Eliette, and Easton Shepherd; Camryn, Brooklynne, Basil, Garrett, and Theia Shepherd; and three sisters, Judy Bentley of Rialto, CA; Sharon (Raymond) Walbert of Granger, IN; and Cheryl (Timothy) Tabler of Greensboro, GA. 

Buck was a member of American Legion Post 284; VFW Post 9820; and the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 1027, all in South Bend, IN.  Buck was an avid Notre Dame sports fan; loved golfing, his Golden Retriever Bubba, and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: VVA Chapter 1027-Widow’s Fund or Scholarship Fund, or Get Wet for a Vet.
