Arlene Marie (Kwiecinski) Spitz

Arlene Marie (Kwiecinski) Spitz, lifelong resident of South Bend, left us to join her husband to be with our Lord Jesus Christ in heaven on June 26, 2024.  Born December 24, 1932, to Martin and Alice (Kaczmarek) Kwiecinski, Arlene had four brothers and five sisters. She lovingly remembered her family, especially her mother, for her caring and generous nature.

Arlene married her beloved husband, Clarence “Pete” Spitz in 1955 at St. Hedwig’s Church. Together, they raised their family here in South Bend and were married for 63 years until his death in 2018.

She is survived by her brother, Ron Kwiecinski and his wife, Barbara, as well as seven children, Michele Warrell, Carolyn Spitz, Kathleen Petitjean, Michael Spitz, Laurie Cooley, Jennifer Spitz, and Sharon Cardona. She also had three children who preceded her to our Lord. She leaves behind 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

With incredible strength and courage, boosted by the love and support of her husband and family, Arlene battled and beat breast cancer, not once, but twice! 

Through many years of hard work, including 25 years employed at Notre Dame Press; while putting her family first, Arlene earned her bachelor’s degree at age 65—a great source of pride for her.

Arlene loved classical music, painting, history, reading, and puzzles.

Using her mother’s generous example, she always strove to feed and care for others.  She hoped she brightened others’ lives and left those she loved and cared for happy. 

A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 28, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Kaniewski Funeral Home (3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana). On Monday, July 29, 2024, a Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Hedwig Church (331 S Scott St, South Bend, Indiana) at 10:00 a.m.
