America Elizabeth Schmaltz

America Elizabeth Schmaltz, 92, of Niles, Michigan passed away on Monday, November 17, 2025 at the Niles Care Center. She was born on December 11, 1932 in New Carlisle, Indiana to the late Estes and Erma (Bowker) Headley. She married James Lintner on January 24, 1953 who preceded her in death in 1972. She went on to Marry Roy Schmaltz in 1977 and he preceded her in death on June 15, 1989.  She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Ermagene Lintner, Helen Cole and Betty Jo Headley, two brothers, Estes Jr. Headley and Forest Headley. America is survived by one daughter, Peggy Ann Marks of Nampa, Idaho, three grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one sister Carol (Mel) Hochstetler of Elkhart, Indiana.

America graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1950. She attended Manchester college. During her life America was a member of AARP, The Women’s Lions Club and The New Troy Grace Brethren Church. America worked at The River Valley Center in Harbert, Michigan. She enjoyed her time spent with the patrons as well helping them with their taxes.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr. South Bend, IN from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Burial will follow in New Carlisle Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in America’s honor to a charity of the donor’s choice.
