Theresa A. "Terri" Herendeen

Theresa A. “Terri” Herendeen passed away at 3:45am on Sunday, October 21, 2018.  Terri was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana but had moved to The Bickford in Carmel, Indiana.

Born on October 8, 1932, to Stephen and Elizabeth (Weinzetl) Steinhoffer.  Terri was the oldest of three children.  Anne Balint, of South Bend, IN, who precedes her in death, and Stephen Steinhoffer of Taft, CA.

Terri is most known by the congregation of Corpus Christi Catholic Church of South Bend.  She played the organ there for approximately 50 years and was the rectory secretary for approximately 45 years.  She also played for many weddings and funerals throughout the years. 

Terri married Robert N. “Doc” Herendeen on December 27, 1958, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, while he was on leave with the United States Air Force.  Robert “Doc” Herendeen passed away on August 5, 2018.  They leave behind three children:  Anne (Paul) Viemann, of Cicero, Indiana; Robert (Valerie) Herendeen, of Leesburg, Indiana; and Edward (Melanie) Herendeen, of Niles, Michigan.  Through their children, they leave behind nine grandchildren:  Elizabeth Boaz, Emily (Trent) Schmale, Alexander (Kathleen) Boaz, Nichole Herendeen, Andrew J. Herendeen, Christopher Herendeen, Amy Herendeen, Jason Viemann, and Lauren Viemann, as well as one great-grandchild, Maximillian Schmale.

Terri had a love of music and began piano lessons at the age of 5.  She attended Saint Mary’s College in South Bend, where she often played the piano and sang in school productions at both Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame.  She then began work in the bookkeeping department at the South Bend Studebaker Manufacturing Plant.  She began playing the organ at Corpus Christi Catholic Church as she was raising her children.  She began taking on additional duties and eventually became a full-time secretary at the rectory and with her love of music, she retained her role as organist at both the school and church.

Terri not only loved music but sports as well.  She loved the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame most of all and cleared her calendar to watch every televised game.  She had a passion for football but when the season was over, she enjoyed baseball and basketball.

A visitation and Mass celebrating the life of Theresa A. “Terri” Herendeen will take place on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.  Visitation will be from 10:00am to 11:45am and the Mass will begin at 12:00pm.  The burial will follow at Highland Cemetery on Portage Road in South Bend.
