 Sophie E. Konieczny, 94, of Surprise, AZ, formerly of South Bend, passed away on Saturday in Surprise. She was born on November 28, 1923, in South Bend, to the late Nicholas and Anna (Jankowski) Badowski. On September 2, 1946, as Sophie Badowski, she married Donald Konieczny, who preceded her in death on August 7, 1996. She was also preceded in death by six sisters, Hattie Dembinski, Wanda Badowski, Irene Sales, Angelia Badowski , Angie Beyer and Alice Marciniak; and by five brothers, Walter, Anthony, Nick, William “Pete” Badowski. Sophie is survived by her two daughters, Kathryn Konieczny of New Zealand and Jean (Ian Huggins) Smith of Surprise, AZ; a son, William (Kathleen) Konieczny of Niles, MI; four grandchildren, Eric Konieczny of South Bend and Neal Smith, Regina Christ and Frank Konieczny all of Surprise; nine great-grandchildren, Trevor, Mollie and Sophie Konieczny, Ethan Christ, Brendan Christ, Tyler Smith, Jacob Christ, Brooklyn Smith and Gianna Christ; a brother, Harry Badowski of Mishawaka, IN; and by two sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Badowski and Margaret Konieczny. Sophie and her husband Don owned Don and Sophie’s Market on Linden Avenue and then Don’s Liquor Oasis on Lincoln Way West for 25 years. She was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus B.M. Catholic Church, a member of St. Anne’s Society, the American Polish Union and was a long time volunteer at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend and later at Banner Del Webb Hospital, Sun City West, AZ. Visitation will be from 10 to noon Friday January 12, 2018 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr., South Bend. Funeral services will follow at noon in the funeral home with burial to conclude in St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend.
