Patrick L. O'Malley, Jr. Obituary

Patrick L. O’Malley, Jr., 78, passed away early Sunday morning in his home surrounded by his family. He lived a life filled with travel, sports and family.

Pat was born July 14, 1940 to Patrick and Helen O’Malley in Boston, Massachusetts.

He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1957 and from Georgetown University in 1961.

On September 14, 1963, while on leave from the Army, he married the love of his life, Bette Sullivan. They enjoyed 55 years together and raised six children: Christyne (Jim) Dzwierzynski; Patrick III (Melinda); Brian (Emily); Michael; Cathleen (Eric) Lower; and Sean. They have 9 grandchildren: Bailey and Patrick IV O’Malley; Alex, Emma and Mia Dzwierzynski; Brenna, Nora and Rowan O’Malley; and Madelyn Lower.

He was a tremendous father who spent countless hours playing catch with his children, coaching them in their sports, watching them in their activities and driving them all around the state so that they could follow their passions. In his later years that same devotion was directed to his grandchildren, following their adventures and accomplishments in person and on Facebook.

After serving 2 years as a 1st Lieutenant in Germany, he joined a training program with Canteen Corporation. He started Northern Indiana Canteen in 1967 and built it into a multi-million dollar company that he operated successfully until selling the company in 1999 and retiring.

At that time Bette and Pat started indulging in their love for travel. In addition to several cruises, highlights included white water rafting in Alaska, relaxing in New Zealand and experiencing the grandeur of Russia. In addition they were fortunate to spend many winters in Naples, Florida.

Pat was active in the community having served as president of, among others, The Indiana Vending Council, The Michiana Arts and Sciences Council, The South Bend Rotary Club, The Notre Dame Quarterback Club, as well as board chair of the St. Joseph County United Way and The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County. He was board secretary of Memorial Hospital and a board member of Goodwill, Tri-Valley Boy Scouts and Knollwood Country Club.

Pat enjoyed sports, particularly Notre Dame football whose games he would never miss. He was a big Notre Dame men’s and women’s basketball fan, and although he was born in Boston he was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees.

The viewing will be held at Kaniewski Funeral Homes at 3545 N. Bendix Dr. in South Bend from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19, 2018. A second viewing will be held at the St. Joseph Chapel, Holy Cross Village, in Notre Dame, Indiana on Thursday, September 20, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with funeral services immediately following and burial to be at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN.
