LoVona F. Slater, 86, of South Bend, passed away on Saturday April 7, 2018 at Healthwin Specialized Care Facility. She was born on August 19, 1931, in South Bend, to the late Harold and Madge (Sisk) Hawkins. On October 24, 1948, as LoVona Hawkins, she married James E. Slater, who preceded her in death on October 3, 2011. Also preceding her in death were her son, Terry Slater and son-in-law, Mike Swanson. LoVona is survived by her daughter, Laura Swanson of South Bend; three grandchildren, Mike (Bethany) Swanson, Ann (Todd) Wisniewski and Craig (Casey) Swanson; four great-grandchildren, Lauren Swanson and Lacie Wisniewski and Alex and Amanda Swanson; a brother, Gale (Betty) Hawkins of South Bend; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Hupp of Granger, IN; special nieces, Linda Marriott, Michelle Reed, Heather Kole and many other nieces and nephews; and by special cousin, Carol (Ron) Simmons. LoVona lived with God in her heart as a Christian woman of faith. She enjoyed family gatherings, especially hosting the holidays. She was a very giving and generous person. She cherished her memories of living in Southern California and then moved back to the area in 1965 to be with her family. She also enjoyed traveling to Nashville to see her family. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 11 to 2 p.m. Friday April 13, 2018 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr., South Bend. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice.
